Patrick John R. Geonzon’s capture of splashes of water as a swimmer slices through the water which he called “Amazing Droplets” clinched the first prize in the annual deBlur photo contest 2010.
Geonzon is a nursing student.
The deBlur is an annual photo contest sponsored by the Cebu Doctors' University Alumni Association (CDUAA) in cooperation with the university and held during the CDU Week celebration.
It is a non-profit activity which aims to deliver to all alumni across the globe a vivid reflection of CDU in one of the major events of the academic year – the Cebu Doctors' University Week.
Majority of the alumni may have no clear picture of CDU at present and the CDUAA hopes to illustrate the best of CDU in academics, arts, culture and sports through the captured images.
It is also hoped that these photographs which could speak a thousand words could inspire the alumni to remain connected with the CDUAA and get involved.
The contest was established in 2008 and participated by CDU Alumni members, students and employees of the CebuDoc Group of Companies.
Each year, the number of participants of the deBlur has been increasing and to elevate the photo contest to a higher level, the CDUAA plans to invite professional photographers to join the competition and capture great images of CDU, its campus and the talent and brilliance of its alumni and students.
2010 was the year that nursing students swept the contest. Placing second and third to Geonzon’s Amazing Droplets is “Body Language” and “Staring Death in the Face” both by Daryl James A. Medillo, also a nursing student.
Receiving the “Special Mention Photograph” award is “Jaws” by Dr. Stephen Aldrich Alsay, a College of Medicine alumnus.
Alsay is no stranger to the contest as he also won the first (Makin Waves) and third prize (Jump Off) in the open category of the deBlur 2009 while Francis Seno’s “The Start” won the second prize. Seno is a College of Nursing alumnus.
Ruling the CDU category in the same year was “Breathe” by Journey Joyce, a Medicine student.
“Priceless Pain” by Shelah Mariz Danao and “Dashing Through” by Jennifer Mabilangan placed second and third, respectively.
Danao is an A.B. Psych student while Mabilangan is a nursing student.
A nursing student also dominated in the deBlur 2008 with Noelle Dotillos’ “Ascendance to Victory” placing first while her “Surging Past the Odds” also placed third.
Second place had gone to the “Color of CDU” by Marc Booc, a biology student.
