CAA UPDATES: The CDUCN-Alumni Association Unity In Diversity by: Randy B. Peras
The Cebu Doctors’ University College of Nursing Alumni Association, headed by its President, Ms. Virheena Bontuyan, has always aimed to provide educational growth to its members; and at the same time, making these events as enjoyable as they come.
Plenty of the members have long since left the island of Cebu, but for those who remain, the sense of belongingness has always been the driving force to maintain this relationship between the college and its former students. Whenever a member is in Cebu, he always finds the time to visit and enjoy the blessing of companionship with former teachers –but who are now, of course, colleagues.
Every year, the CDUCN-AA always holds a homecoming event, to welcome and celebrate the visiting batches of old –and new. Such an event was organized and held at the Harold’s Hotel in the City of Cebu on the 15th of July, year 2011. This event was made to recognize Dawns ’81 and ’91, respectively; with the working theme “Certified Alumni”.
The Masters of Ceremonies for the said event were Ms. Valerie Lucero (Faculty Member), and Mr. Voltaire Tabasa; who both did an excellent job hosting. The Honorees present were acknowledged and given special gifts. They are as follows:
From Dawn ’81, Ms. Maria Loida Benabay, Mrs. Rosalinda Apostol, Mrs. Ellen Odron, Mrs. Vivica Sariego, Mrs. Maria Lorecho Cariňo, Mrs. Patria Leguera, and Mrs. Rosario Segut. From Dawn ’91, Mrs. Aurora Pestaňo.
After a very sumptuous dinner, intermission numbers were given by some of the more recent alumni members. A dance presentation by former members of the Nursing “Hottaw” Dance Team, and a song rendition by Mr. Willand Cuňa and Ms. Alyssa Fuentes. Dr. Ofelia F. Sisno also gave an inspirational message and thanked the attendants who took the time for a reunion with the College of Nursing. It was indeed a special and splendid evening.
The next event organized by the CDUCN-AA was a seminar on the month of July, 2011 entitled “Critical Care Nursing: Basics and Beyond”. Its aim was to provide continuing education to the attending alumni, and further equip them for actual hospital work. This, of course, is a vital part of the many functions of a wellrounded nurse.
The Guest Speakers for the seminar were Ms. Kathleen Mae S. Labrado and Mr. Quirico A. Gan III. Certificates were given to those in attendance; and the guest speakers were acknowledged with tokens for the time and effort they gave, out of their own personal and busy lives, for the seminar.
All this was done, and made possible, by the CDUCN-AA Officers for the benefit of the alumni. As Dr. Jose Rizal said more than a hundred years ago, “He who does not know how to look back at where he came from will never get to his destination”. This is true and evident in all the graduates of the different colleges, not just in nursing.
Looking back into the past, or where we came from, reestablishes and re-affirms our personal dreams and aspirations in life. That no matter what happens, we have a college –peopled with a group of individuals, giving beyond their work hours, to help us grow and become the professionals that we are. |
