CDUAA News: Alumni Sportsfest by: Ralph Dy
The 1st ever CDUAA Sports fest kicked off last July 10, 2010. The Basketball league consisted of College of Nursing, College of Medicine, Department of Radiologic Technology, Department of Medical Technology, College of Arts and Sciences and College of Dentistry. The opening day was highlighted with the parade around the Campus, different team colours and uniforms accompanied by their muse, with drum and bugle chord spearheading the parade. The parade was followed by a short opening program at the CDU gymnasium with muses flaunting their beauty & smarts. The event was graced by our alumni President Dr. Mc Arthur Salonga (2008-2010). The basketball games were held in the CDU gymnasium and Mandaue Sports Complex in different schedules making it hard for the teams to adjust to the environment of the different venues. With the games played almost daily, it turned out to be a stiff and gruelling competition. The top 4 teams then advanced to the semifinals; College of Nursing, College of Dentistry, Department of Medical Technology and Department of Radiologic Technology, it ended up to be a championship game for the College of Nursing against the College of Radiologic Technology and College of Medical Technology against College of Dentistry for the 3rd placer. The 1st CDUAA Basketball league was won by the College of Nursing as they were the younger and they have the complete arsenal at their disposal, Department of Radiologic Technology got 2nd place followed by Department of Medical Technology at 3rd place. The tournament ended with the two exciting games last July 23, 2010.
On the other hand, there was a volleyball game for the women. Graduate School and College of Nursing were battling with rallies and dives. They played a best of three series as these were the only teams competing in the said event. College of Nursing was hailed the winner after spiking their way to the crown.
Last April 2011, the much awaited 2nd season of the CDUAA Sports fest was again on its way. As the news spread, more colleges were trying to organize their teams to prepare another battle in the basketball court. This time, with the College of Rehabilitative Sciences in the mix, the competition was made tougher. Each College had their new players and new alumnus to add to their teams. The opening day was graced by our CDUAA president Dr. Alex Magalona (2010-2012). This time, 7 teams compete for the crown. Teams were fighting tooth and nail to earn a slot into the final four Semi-finals. The teams that advanced were spearheaded by the College of Nursing followed by the Department of Medical Technology, College of Dentistry and College of Arts and Sciences. It seemed like every game was its last as the four teams were tested physically and mentally. College of Nursing cruised to the finals as the mightily favoured team. On the other hand the College of Medical Technology survived the physical toughness of the College of Arts and Sciences. It was an intense game where the physically tougher and mentally stronger would go ahead as the victor in the Championship game. The winner was not clear until the last buzzer of the game. College of Nursing again went out victorious as the champions, Department of Medical Technology came up short with the final score of 66 – 58. The College of Arts and Sciences bagged 3rd place with the score of 67-62 against the College of Dentistry.
It was another good season for the CDUAA Sports fest successfully ended, from nail biting wins to adrenaline pumping excitement. Next season is just around the corner as teams can’t wait to gear up for the fun and exciting competitions ahead. |
